Distractions

I want to be that Christian. You know the one who believes it absolutely does not matter who is in the White House because the LORD God remains on the throne of His Kingdom.

Or maybe more like Habakkuk when he said, “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation” (Habakkuk 3:17-18).

Once we have a President-elect, I think I will be able to stop thinking about this. Until then, should Christians be doing whatever we can to speak the truth about political issues?  Should we influence others to understand that God is always in control and we are to serve Him and be His ambassadors all the time? Is this a distraction from God’s Work or is it God’s work, too?

The election. Covid. Black Lives Matter. Antifa. Vaccines. Abortion. Homosexuality. As  Christians, we are to think on whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8). As I read the first list, it’s obvious that these things do not fall into any of these Philippians 4 categories.

But wait. We can stand firm for what is right in standing against voter fraud and practice justice. We can apply several of the adjectives (true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, and worthy of praise) to the rest of the list. As long as we are on the holy side of the argument, we can stay in the argument! The Bible addresses them all.

The two men competing for the Presidency have opposite views of everything the Christian needs to consider in this life. It is important to seek the most righteous leaders (not just for President) as we can.  But, with social media outlets and the angriest times I have lived through, does the way we are “fighting for the win” honor our Lord? Are we more concerned for our own interests than we are for His?

There is clear evidence that there has been voter fraud. Do we care because “our guy” lost or because it is a sin against God? Christians should be talking about true justice for the voter and for those people running for office, willing to speak the truth of what they know, not stay out of it because it’s “political.”

It is a fact that the future of our nation’s move toward a Godly nation or a Marxist nation will depend a lot on how the Church addresses these issues from the pulpit. How we address them in our own neighborhoods and homes is also important. Are we approaching them from a biblical worldview? The boldness of pro-abortion people is a clear reminder of what happens when the Church is not bold about confronting evil practices in our culture.

What is striking these days is how much the problems of the world point us to how much we’re missing whatever is honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, or worthy of praise. We are in a battle to make them so. We know what to fight for because God has made it so clear in His Word, especially in His law.

Jesus said that when He left He would send us a Helper, the Spirit of Truth, who the world will not receive (John 14:16-17), but who will dwell in us and will be with us.

We do not fight these battles for all that is good and right according to God by ourselves. And they are not just distractions – they are fields to work in. And He has sent Help! We can stand firm because He will give us the strength, the words, and the power to stay in the fight – when we are on the right side of the issues. Not in the army on the left and not in the army on the right but as a part of the Lord’s army!

Can we all think like Joshua? “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).
