A Sovereign God vs A Senseless Murder

Charlie Kirk’s death was a shock and, from a human perspective, a senseless murder that remains unresolved.

Where is God when these things happen? We love to acknowledge His sovereignty when all the good things of life are poured out on us. We lift our voices and our hands in praise to God who blesses us! But, we seem to question His sovereignty when a difficult, in this case evil, thing happens. A young wife left as a single Mom and widow, thousands of young people (mostly men) lost a godly influence and a bold and courageous example for defending our faith.

Apparently, Charlie Kirk has had his life threatened many times. His attitude was that if he died, He would be with Jesus. His call was to boldly proclaim truth now. And, he did.

These are times when knowing what the scriptures teach brings a certain level of peace. In God’s plan, September 10, 2025 was the day Charlie would die. His Word says that God has appointed a time for each one of us. We will not live a moment less or a day more than He has decided.

  • “Since his days are determined, the number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass (Job 14:5).
  • “Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them” (Psalm 139:16).

Our nation is in big trouble but we have the assurance that God takes care of His people. Charlie is safer now than he has ever been. His wife appears to have a strong faith. God will care for her, too.  How do I know?

  • Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all (Psalms 34:19).

But, one of greatest assurances from the scripture when the evil seems to overcome the good is God’s promise of vengeance. If the local, state, or university police never find the man who shot Charlie, if the FBI and CIA fail to get the job done, God promises, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay”  (Romans 12:19).  This verse includes a warning that we are not to try to take vengeance. The civil government is assigned the job of punishment for the evil deed. In this case, murder calls for the death penalty from a biblical view.

There is clearly a hatred for our God and His people in our nation. We (Christians) can expect exactly what we’ve seen since the murder happened. There are people (including an MSNBC reporter and some members of Congress if the reports are true) mocking, cheering the death, and celebrating on social media, encouraging others that this murder was deserved and justifiable because they disagreed with him. How predictable! Speaking from the point of view of wisdom in Proverbs 8:36, the scriptures declare that those who hate wisdom love death.

Over time, we will see (in God’s sovereignty) that Charlie Kirk’s death was not senseless (Romans 8:28). I pray it will spur an active revival among the young men he had ministered to in the Name of Jesus Christ. Bigger than that, I pray it will wake us all up to the fact that our witness is important in our spheres of influence (and we all have one). The Lord gave Charlie Kirk a huge one and he proved himself worthy of the task.

God may have given some of us a much smaller sphere of influence but we have the same level of responsibility to be faithfully speaking the truth when opportunities are presented. Will there be consequences because people hate the message? Probably. Do we trust God with our lives?

God is worthy of a Charlie Kirk-style bold faithfulness and witness to His Word. Will we give it to Him?
